Ahoy!
12 boats including the guest Alerion Express 20, "Shooting Star", sailed the triangle in reverse with a windward starting leg. Artful Dodger, traveling from Falmouth, broke the hex and got his cup with a substantial lead. The wind was strong throughout the race and each boat design addressed the blow as required. Some reefed their sails, others sheeted in with their travelers set low while some boats relied on their size and weight to keep the boat up to the breeze. A few people on the rail was another answer. Clearly, when racing boats of different designs, wind strength rates high on determining the outcome. That said, the fleet finished surprisingly close on elapsed time, indicating a high level of seamanship within the HHSA ranks. The corrected times spanned just 9 minutes for the close to 4 mile course.
Welcome to the Shooting Star! Hopefully she will become a regular. Her finish (17:55:48) was where we would expect the 20 footer and when she joins, a "starter rating" will determine her finish, to the second.
Next race is Sunday, 1:00 PM warning signal.
Still time to register for this year's Jewett Bowl, to be sailed on Saturday, August 6. To encourage participation by HHSA members, HHSA, will pay the $25 registration fee. To register, go to the following link.
When prompted, HHSA members who are not VHYC members should use the following coupon code JBHH2022 at checkout and HHSA will pay the $25 registration fee. VHYC members should use their club charge numbers (which will result in no charge to either the member or HHSA).
Looking forward to a great turnout this year for this year's Jewett. Frank Jewett, an olympic sailor and very active in the VHYC, was instrumental in the 1976 founding of the HHSA. His leadership in starting group as a counter to the cut throat one design sailing of the club at the time brought great opportunities for those, maybe less competitive, who had all sorts of designs of sailboats, to participate in this great sport. The HHSA seasonal award, The Jewett Cup, is named in honor of Frank as is the VHYC's Jewett Bowl. The cooperation between the HHSA and the VHYC is rare but is strong thanks to those that belong to both groups and sporting spirit that both organizations promote.
All the Best, Roger.
PS: Once again, the actual results are slightly different from those announced at the VHYC dinner. The extra .5 mile distance wasn't calculated for the earlier results announcement.
