Ahoy!
Epic battle seemed to take days to find resolution.
Chapter One: 6 boats start in a light unforecasted North East wind. A search along the West Chop side yielded nothing, nor did those looking along the East Chop. The destination of the course 2 race demanded entering the sound with little hope of enough wind to get as far as the buoy at Hedge Fence.
Chapter Two: Sure enough there was nothing like a wind but there was a current that indicated speed over ground towards the west as 5 boats entered the sound, essentially simultaneously. Then a Divergence. Trinity caught something and rode it towards the West and gaining to the North. Penelope and Silhouette, just moments later, picked a more direct course but with seemingly less wind. Gloria smashed into some motorboat wake, spilling the little way she had into the ocean as she tried to make some distance on Altius who still searched for some boost.
Chapter Three: The forecasted Southwest wind finally spread across the course, South to North, putting the seal on the results. Those in lead back towards the harbor jumped into action battling with each other for the cup. Gloria, on target without losing too much to the current, also found the new wind stretched her lead over the two boats that lost out to the current which unmercifully drove the boats west ward with little wind to help.
The End: No rating could be depended on to sort out what the lack of wind fomented. Where one was when the breeze came through was the determinate factor, but it did help if you got your boat positioned and sails set for when it came.
Mo and Pam Flam, sailing Penelope, won their second cup this season. Can someone come and give them trouble next Sunday?
The H-12 Fleet sported 5 boats gathering for the start, but Lila had an equipment issue and retired before the start. The remaining 4 finished as follows.
#223 Providence - 1st
#342 Whirlwind - 2nd
#254 Patch of Green - 3rd
#438 Leap of Faith - 4th.
Next Race Thursday. VHYC Snack bar open afterwards with a chance to complain about your ratings, course selections etc. See you there.
All the best, Roger.
