12 very optimistic Holmes Hole sailors showed up for the race today, ignoring the forecasts showing no hope for any wind at all. The race committee, occupied with VHYC team racing, sent a B team that showed itself up to the task. Undaunted by the conditions, they soldiered through several postponements and started the fleet at 1:50 in a very iffy north breeze. An hour or so later, with the fleet not even half way to Nun 4, they wisely abandoned the race.
New member, but old time Sailmaster/Moffett racer, Frank Brunelle, brought his Tartan 34, Pegasus, out for the first time this season. The welcome committee was unable to provide a hope of wind to match his enthusiasm.
As the question of which direction keeps coming up I would like to once again, even for the old time HolmesHolers, remind you that the "regular" direction around Course 1 and 0 is CLOCKWISE. That is, West Chop, then East Chop. Reverse direction is COUNTERCLOCKWISE. Think of how your watch keeps time by going the normal way around...that is CLOCKWISE. Now draw a triangle and then a circle around the the triangle. Now put arrows showing the direction that the hour, minute and second hands move, normally, around the face of the clock. That's CLOCKWISE. The founders of the HHSA were interested in keeping sailboat racing simple, friendly and fun. They would never consider making hard to follow course directions. Enjoy the simplicity!
Thursday the forecast now shows 13 knots from the SW with a little sun. See you on the water.
Roger.
