The end of season celebration Moffett Race went off without a hitch for the 48th time. The wind was strong and building from 18-25 with gusts to 30 and its strength discouraged several from racing and others dropped out. 18 of the 29 entrants finished the race. Calabash won the race, Zebra was 2nd and Artful Dodger 3rd. It was Moffett course #3 which is a 10.9 mile run across the sound to Waquoit Bay buoy and back, but two buoys along the way needed to be rounded making for a zig-zagged course. Current ran with increasing speed west ward and generally helped the boats along the way. The fastest boat, Isabel, finished in just 1 hour and 35 minutes and the last boat crossed the finish line an hour later. The design of the boats entered ran the gamut as is the usual for the Moffett, but a big one for today would have been the most desired. The race was short but most were happy to be out of the wind especially as it increased in velocity after 1:30.
Post season racing for those who want to continue using their boats for a couple of more months, starts Thursday, 4:00 PM at Nun 6.
