Ahoy!

No wind for a race Tarpaulin Cove but a shifty, variable breeze showed up for a race around Course #3 with some serious current.  The Easterly breeze filled in for the start and moved to the south over the course of the 1 1/2 hour race.  The flooding tide provided help over the majority of the course but was foul for a couple of short legs leaving and entering the harbor. A great challenge was to choose the best route but nothing could have predicted the shifty winds as they moved to the south while the fleet worked its way from Can 23a to the finish line.  Easy Rider used that leg to gain back previously lost ground to finish first on elapsed time.  Gloria took advantage of the light winds, usually favorable to her, but also chose the sides of the course which produced the most favorable currents, and won handily.

The brand new design, a Storm 18, joined the race today.  The boat is being promoted as the perfect club boat for all ages.  Similar but smaller than the J70 it sports a retractable 600 lb keel with bulb and weighs 1400 lbs.  There are no rating numbers that I could find, so we must conclude the boat did well today, or maybe not.  Note that it finished about 2 minutes behind Gloria but will likely beat that time next race.  I hope to see the Storm 18 compete again with the HHSA and help build a database for the design.
