6 boats sailed course 1 today after a 19 minute postponement of the start. The wind from the northeast was tentative but a trial run from the south allowed an orderly start on a broad reach from Nun 6 to Nun 4. That wind then receded and a new wind filled from the south showed up to blow the remains away. So the first leg involved some loss of steerage on Gloria as she sat becalmed between the two winds to the east of fleet, and a splendid surge by Sandpiper who found some wind and current close along West Chop. The leaders lost their wind right while attempting to round Nun 4 in a foul current. That all allowed Gloria to catch up on the new wind and continue to stay close enough along the 5 remaining legs to finish in first place.
Not so lucky was Gloria in Saturday's VHYC's Jewett bowl race which also involved a battle between winds. Even the good timing of tides was not enough to keep the non-spinaker flyers in the competition with those that had use of a chute. The Jewett Bowl went to Steve Besse sailing Apres. All but a couple of club sonar sailors were HHSA regulars, and 5 of the 6 Sunday racers were happy to continue the wind study as today's breeze filled in better than on Saturday.
