Ahoy!

Once again 13 boats started this afternoon's race in 10 knots of Southwest breeze.  The course, clearly signaled and started right on time, as Course #2 in reverse with a windward start requiring a port rounding at Nun 6 to start the competition.  Things seemed to drag going to Can 23a but picked up as we all dashed to West Chop.  The next leg,  again down wind, was a good chance to see if your GPS was working, or lacking one, if you could sense the current's impact on your course.   The choice, go Port or Starboard coming back to the Nun 6 finish divided the fleet almost exactly in two but even now I'm not sure if one favored the other or not.

One thing was clear:  Big time was lost by a few of us as we steered clear of the Islander coming to MV while we headed downwind from Nun 4.  The Woods Hole's captain has a thing about sailboats and his short temper needs to be addressed.  Not wanting to diverge from his imaginary right of way, he felt it necessary to sound his horn at Tyche long after he had time to simply steer around the little green boat but his choice was to hold tight to the Nun 4 as if it would make a difference in his finish time.  I've never seen such a reaction from one of the ferries.   Last Sunday the Woods Hole captain felt somehow in danger sitting at the dock and sounded his horn for a good ten seconds as I Rolled my Jib and headed to my mooring.  The Woods Hole seems to have a schedule that puts the ferry .5 miles from Nun 6 at almost exactly 6:00 PM and again, the captain seems to think full speed ahead within 25 feet of the committee boat is his destiny.  Does he not see all that water to the East? The Islander's captain, on the other hand, calmly waited to see what we were up to and, as a group, we bared off, leaving a nice space through which he piloted his ferry.  No horns, nothing unusual, just like the last I don't know how many years.

So we have some newcomers and today's results include them even though a couple of long standing HHSA rules were not observed.  Suffice it to say, in the future, that is, starting now, even these sailors will have to observe the rules or be disqualified.

I sent the Instructions out last Friday.  Get them out and read again.  1. No loose luffed sails.  HHSA has long banned the use of Spinnakers and other loose luffed sails in an effort to keep the sailing simple and family friendly.  The use of these sails has been discussed many times over the years with the board of governors always sticking with ban.  We can talk about it again and poll the membership on the question to see if the rule should be changed, but as of now, if you fly such a sail, you will be disqualified.  I can't use your times to establish a meaningful rating using this race if you flew a loose luffed sail.  2. In the course instructions you will see that all boats must honor Nun 4 and Can 23a as you leave and enter the harbor if and when those aids are not used as race turning marks.  Enough said.

Congratulations to Bow, for keeping Tyche up with and finishing ahead of the pack on corrected time.
