RE: HHSA: Sunday's Results

Thanks for your continued efforts in making this a fun exercise for all  -- er, perhaps most.  For those who were not at Waterside today, it was after discussing the results of today’s race of Biblical proportions  -- where the last shall be first and the first shall be last  -- we got into the discussion of scoring, which apparently has some natives restless.

This discussion in turn led to further education of the Italian language to folks on the word “Gozzinta.”  Many of you have heard it from me before. Classic definition is derived from the tab at a restaurant when you and several friends have asked for the check and someone asks, “What is the gozzinta?”  So when five of you have eaten and the tab is $200, the gozzinta is $40. (5 goes into 200)

Simple and now nearly the whole western world uses it.

I then went on to explain how I calculate my cost of sailing gozzinta.  You take the money you spend with Phil Hale and other places on your boat and divide that by the amount of times you go sailing.

I have tried for years to get to 20 so if I have a $4000 tab for the year, my gozzinta is $200 for the day. Many a time after a wonderful day on the water, I have said – “Now that was worth $200!”

Other days, not so much.  Some years you spend more money than others, and some years you sail more than others. I have said often, that unless you have really deep pockets and money doesn’t matter, a gozzinta of $500 or more means you maybe ought to think about chartering a boat!!!  We all have probably had years where chartering might have been the better option.

So now after hearing about this scoring controversy, I am prepared to announce the newest gozzinta.  In a formula that should be less complicated than calculating a 12 meter America’s cup boat, we can take the number of permutations and combinations of X racing events by Y qualifying races and Z elimination factors and come up with the “floating gozzinta.”

I plan on reviewing the math with the master himself, Roger Becker, but this variable formula, called floating for obvious reasons, should be able to handle the concerns raised about racing a variety of boats and classes.

I am already working on the design of the “Gozzinta cup.”   Which of course leads to another definition. It’s not always coffee that gozzinta the cup.  It’s such a useful word.

If today was the curtain call it ended on a great day.  With our present scoring I saw myself winning a race and falling behind one notch in the cumulative standings! Welcome to the pack, Steve!

If there is another race – I will see you on the water.  When do discuss the Frostbiting Series?

Subject: HHSA: Sunday's Results

Well, we are down to 5 today under grey skies and a stiff Northwest wind.   A little less wind than predicted but enough to get Steve Besse and his Apres around the course #1 in a record 54 minutes and 30 seconds.   The previous record, 56 minutes 59 seconds, also held by Apres, was established on September 1st of 2013.  It was decided that insofar as the time was registered during a HHSA timed race, albeit in the post season, that time will stand as the new record.  Unfortunately, just because one does very well getting around the course, it does not necessarily follow that you will score well in the race.  In this case Lagoonah also sailed the course faster than his usual pace, in fact, much faster, and was declared the winner.

The town dock was busy with Holmes Holers preparing their boats for winter storage and the post race discussion was centered on the possibility of a last race next Sunday (Thursday's weather sounds unpleasant).  Dan Culkin has done the math and thinks Magic Time cannot move up from second place without two more first place finishes.  The race committee was advised to reconsider the throwout issue for the 2015 post season racing.

Watch for Announcements from David Lott, post season organizer, concerning the possibility of another race - or not.

Roger.
