HHSA: Results of 2026 Race To Tarpaulin Cove

Ahoy!   10 Boats set off, one at time, using the Pursuit start system that preloads the ratings by allowing the slower rated boats a head start.  The scoring is determined by relative position at the finish line.  All ten arrived in good order and 4 or 5 rafted together for lunch of Brats provided by Mike Powers and crew of the Artful Dodger.  Julia Lee, the 20' wooden cat boat with the largest head start was un-catchable and she won the race.  As listed below, the boats found the Coast Guard Mooring ball, and their positions were recorded. Some provided times and indications are that the results were close.  Sorry to say, a weird ankle malady kept me from bringing along Gloria today and judging from the reports, it was a day not to be missed.  Jerry Goodale sailed his cruiser, Sienna, to last place, but he was in high spirits as he reported to me that the day was probably the best weather and conditions to Tarp in years.  Keep in mind, Jerry has sailed to Tarpaulin Cove more times than any living member of the HHSA....and that includes during his time serving as First Mate on the Shanondoah in the 60s and 70s...so he knows a little about the trip...and back.   

      I was reminiscing about the race course to Tarp being, possibly, the site of the first ever yacht race in America, maybe in 1933.  A quick trip via AI into the records shows this is likely just another story, but, be that at it may, now there is long record of the HHSA races to Tarp over the years. I can tell you, there are many stories of groundings, fog and thunderstorms....even a twister in the VH harbor as the fleet returned one year....complete with a sunken boat, Elise, at the tip of the breakwater....people in the water swimming around the tip of the mast!
