AHOY!

After a record setting week of weird weather, 12 boats came out for great Sunday afternoon sailboat race.  The course was #2 with a windward starting leg.  The boats were expected to sail to the harbor N6 buoy, leave it to starboard and proceed to the West end of Hedge Fence, RG buoy.  Some of the racers did not leave it to port, but rather to starboard and proceeded back south to N4 (Leave to port), east to C23a (Leave to starboard) and finish back at N6 and the committee boat.  In addition, Course #2 states that when/if Nun 4 is not a turning mark, it must be honored when entering and leaving the Harbor.  (This was done to make sure larger boats with deep keels are not disadvantaged by smaller boats that can sneak around the chop, close into shore.  I did not monitor offenders of this clause today...but wondered by why so many went so far west as the left the harbor.)   It is not unusual to forget to check the course and make mistakes...in this case it may have been a follow the leader problem.  Either way the 5 boats which proceeded to completion without correcting their error were retired after the finish.  This is the simplest and most straight forward way of several ways to score the race.  Having made such a mistake in the past, I feel for those who find themselves in this position.  I can remember an entire 60 boat fleet of Moffett racers mistakenly taking a shortcut in one race and in another, one half of the fleet sailed the course in reverse (Correct way) while the the other half went with the opposite direction. In both instances, 4 hours later, at the after race party, there were some very unhappy people. I suggest printing out the circular to keep onboard.  Checking the website would also be worth the time if you have help on board to hold on to the tiller.

I noticed that every boat seemed to have a good group of people on board having a great "last chance in June" race.  I'm guessing 60-70 people all together for the HHSA outing.

This race was the first 2025 peek into the sound.  Clearly some were found not remembering about the effect the currents have out there and the way West Chop divides up the SW wind between the sound and the harbor.

Next race Thursday, 5:05 PM Start.
