On a ten scale, today was a 20. Absolutely gorgeous day. The wind was in the mid-teens with gusts to perhaps 25. The H 12 loves a vigorous "blow" and the two H 12 entries had a wonderful sailing day as the wind whipped up, time and again, out of the southeast. A special thanks to Charlie Felder and Tania Zouikin for passing up on the race themselves so that they could serve as Race Officers on the Felder power boat for both the Holmes Hole regular fleet and our H 12's.
Whirlwind completed the race for a victory while Providence retired with a broken boom, for which Halpert blamed his own poor judgement in leaning against the boom, as he stood up to enjoy the blow and take in full the spectacle. A crisp blue sky, 8 to 10 larger Holmes Holers barreling off the starting line as they made their way to Nun #6 for their upwind start; a variety of 420 fleets from Edgartown, Nantucket and elsewhere competing in a VHYC youth regatta, curious power boats most everywhere, and a boat load of passengers aboard Island Home as it headed to the Ferry Terminal, all on board gawking at what would have been for many of them their first sight of Vineyard Haven.
We can say with all objectivity, that Vineyard Haven Harbor, with its multiple facets, is the most beautiful one in all the world, and today the Herreshoff 12 1/2's were the two most beautiful boats out there!
Phil
H 12 fleet captain
